NUSOJ Calls for Greater Journalists' Protect as a Journalist slightly Injured during demonstration in Mogadishu
Mogadishu, August 10, 2012
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is concerned about the safety and the security of the Somali journalists amid a broadcast journalist, covering demonstrations in Mogadishu, was slightly wounded on Thursday August 09, 2012 around 11:00am local time.
At least 2 people were killed and three others were wounded including a journalist Abdikarim Said Yusuf "Shujac" who reports for one of the leading radio stations, Kulmiye News Network at the Sayidka area in Waberi district, after a stray bullet hit him on the left leg below the knee, according to Yusuf Ahmed Abukar, the editor of radio Kulmiye who spoke with NUSOJ.
"As I was covering the demonstration, it automatically turned into violent when he was hit by the stray bullet." Abdikarim Said Yusuf "Shujac" said , "my health condition is good now, but will go further medical treatment to check if the bullet penetrated or still in my body."
The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) calls for greater protection for journalists and that the journalists' safety be put on high priority amid the casualties of the journalists has dramatically increased, while the journalists and the media workers do not have proper safety trainings to protect themselves.
"The journalists are susceptible for many dangers, as they do not know how to take cover while covering dangerous environments," Mrs. Habiba Ahmed Jimale, NUSOJ Supreme council Vice chairwoman said, "I urge the Somali government and concerned authorities to give the safety of the journalist at the highest priority."
The members of Somali media directors and editors came together in a meeting at the NUSOJ office in Mogadishu on August 3, 2012 focused on the safety and the descent working conditions of the Somali Journalists following the murder of Abdi Jeylani Malaq Marshale on July 31, 2012 by unknown gunmen, meanwhile the conference welcomes the adoption of Somalia's new constitution.
So far this year, seven (7) journalists and media workers were killed in Somalia alone and several other journalists seriously wounded in an attempted assassinations making Somalia deadly year for the journalists.
