U.S Endorses AU,UN, IGAD Joint Statement on Somalia Process August 14, 2012 During a August 13, 2012 interview with Radio Bar Kulan, the U.S. Special Representative for Somalia, Ambassador James C. Swan, endorsed the joint statement, Ending the Transition in Somalia, issued by the UN, IGAD and AU. Ambassador Swan noted that: “We very much welcome the progress that has been made by the Somali leadership in getting to this stage in the transition process; especially the selection of elders, the convening of the National Constituent Assembly, and the adoption of the new constitution. But there is much more work that needs to be done. We are at a critical moment right now in terms of the selection of the Parliament and we very much share the concerns of the African Union, IGAD and the United Nations over multiple credible reports of intimidation and corruption in the selection of the new Parliament, inadequate representation of women and in some cases reports of former warlords who are being nominated by their communities. We think it is very important that the new Parliament be credible, be accountable and be broadly representative of the Somali people in order that it discharge its important tasks both between now and the end of the transition and in the post transition period.”
