Somali national army secures K50 Airport
Somali government forces have today captured the strategic town of K50 and subsequently the airstrip within the town.
In an offensive launched this morning, the troops secured the key airstrip 42kms west of Mogadishu, which was used as a port of entry of arms for the Al Qaeda-affiliated terror group Al Shabaab.
This strategic airport lies on the road to the militants’ main base of Marka, which now remains within 35 km away.
The capture of K50 is the latest in a string of Somali National Army successes that has pushed Al Shabaab terrorists out of much of central and south Somalia, giving space for much needed political progress that will pave the way for the return of permanent and representative government.
