Somali Presidents hosts dinner party for AMISOM and senior Somali government forces

(Mogadishu, Somalia, Aug. 7th, 2012)-Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed on Monday held a special dinner party with senior members of the Somali national army and military officials from the African Union Mission to Somalia AMISOM in commemoration of the first anniversary of Al-Shabaab exit from Mogadishu.

The dinner party was attended by the Somali Defence Minister Hussein Arab Isse, Interior and National Security Minister Abdisamad Maalim Mohamud, Somali Army Chief of Staff General Abdulkadir Sheikh Ali Dini, Police Commissioner Sharif Sheikuna Maye and senior AMISOM officials.

Defence Minister addressing the guests at the dinner party said that a lot of blood was shed in the liberation of Mogadishu adding that the victory wasn’t an easy one. Interior and National Security Minister on his part said that the joint Somali security forces highly upheld the security of the capital in the past year.

A senior AMISOM official addressing the gathering said that the liberation of Mogadishu is a historic day for the people of Somalia and hoped that by the end of the year Somali will be fully liberated from the Al-Shabaab and mass celebrations will be held across the country.

President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said “the prevailing calm witnessed in Mogadishu has greatly contributed to the government success, because if it were not for the improved security we would not have held high level conferences in Mogadishu like the Roadmap agreement. Therefore Mogadishu stability has greatly contributed to the latest government progress”.

Somali President praised the African Union troops for their relentless war against the Al Qaeda and its Al-Shabaab affiliates and also shared his condolence with AMISOM who lost many of its soldiers in the offensives.

“It’s important to recognize the value of peace. I take this opportunity to thank the AMISOM forces who have fought hard to liberate Somalia from extremism and in the process have lost many of their best soldiers including high ranking officials like the Burundi commander. Therefore it’s fair enough to note that peace did not come easily”. President Sharif reiterated.

The president also praised the joint collaboration between AMISOM and Somali National Army and called on the people of Somalia to notice the role played by the AMISOM troops in fighting the Al Qaeda and Al-Shabaab extremists.

“After I took helm of the leadership of Somalia, I tried hard to create understanding between TFG and AMISOM troops and after a while we succeeded in that. And the most important thing now is not even the TFG-AMISOM relation but also the Somali civilians and AMISOM are relating well and to us a government that was a great achievement”. President Sharif said.

Addressing the joint TFG and AMISOM forces in Mogadishu President Sharif called on the AMISOM forces to uphold the security of Mogadishu now that the country was entering election period. He also called on AMISOM to create a proper, secure environment and counter any possible Al-Shabaab threat as the country was entering a new era following the end of the Transitional Government.

Finally the president declared his future desire for Somalia and said “it’s my craving desire to make Somalia a safe place in the coming four years; the national army to be rebuilt and restructured; the rebuilding of the countries institutions, we want to erase from the Somali people memory the two decade civil war; we want Somalia to be visible again in the Africa continent as a stable nation and we hope to the almighty that it all becomes a reality and a total success.
