(Mogadishu, Somalia, June, 27, 2012) the president of the Republic of Somalia H. E Sharif Sh. Ahmed addressed the delegates at the international counter-Piracy Conference held in Dubai today, in a long speech, the President outlined his governments long term vision to tackle the threat of piracy in the horn of Africa and asked the international community to support that initiative. President Sharif emphasized the need to build and strengthen the Somali Security Sector, particularly the Somali cost guards. “The solution to deal with the threat pose by Somali piracy lies on land not at sea” said President Sharif. President Sharif also expressed the need to address the root causes of piracy, such as unemployment amount the youth in coastal areas, illegal fishing and the dumping of toxic waste by foreign vassals. President Sharif informed the participants of the progress made in Somalia in terms of Security, political and development and gave his assurances that Somalia will be able to fulfill its international obligations and protect its maritime if the current level of progress is maintained. The Conference was attended by high level government officials from more than 50 countries, senior representatives of international organizations and CEOs from maritime-related business. - END– Suldan A.
