Central Somali town prepares for 1st soccer tourney in 3 years

Football coaches from 8 neighborhoods in the central Somali town of Beledweyne have sat for five-day coaching course as kind of preparations for the town’s football tournament which is to be held next month for the first time in three years. This coincides with five months after the Al-Qaeda-linked Somali militants of Al-shabaab were ousted out of the region.

The course is being instructed by Mohamed Abdullahi Buraale who was one of the young coaches trained in the first phase of the Somali FA’s regional football boost up program held in the Gal-Mudug semiautonomous state. Ali Hassan Beyle is also teaching the coaches some parts of laws of the game concerning coaching.

Chairman of football committee in the city Hassan Hajji Omar told the opening ceremony over the weekend that with the help of Somali Football Federation his committee intends to re-launch the town’s football tournament which hasn’t been held for the past three years during which Islamist militants have been controlling the whole region of Hiiraan.

“We are very grateful to the Somali Football Federation for training the local instructors who are now conducting the course and we want the SFF to organize more other courses for the region to help the speedy growth of football knowledge across the region which is now recovering from years of football ban by Islamists” the regional football committee chairman told the opening ceremony.

According to the chairman of the Beledweyne city’s football committee Hassan Hajji Omar, the five day-long coaching course is due to be concluded on Wednesday.

Somali Football Federation Secretary General Abdi Qani Said Arab said that the course was part of SFF’s annual work plans of spreading football power through out all Somali regions.

“I send my particular thanks to the football volunteers in the region including the young instructors who are playing a key role in the boost up of football knowledge in their region” the SFF secretary General said in a press statement Monday.

“Somali Football Federation is fully lauding for such steps taken forward and we encourage other regions in the country to organize such courses and the SFF will help as much as it can, but commitment must first be shown by every region” the secretary General added in his Monday’s press statement.
