The United States Government has seen a variety of recent reports suggesting that as many as 5,000 civilians have departed Kismaayo.  We understand that humanitarian agencies have begun contingency planning to respond to the needs of those civilians fleeing from Kismaayo to other regions in Somalia or into Kenya.   We call on all parties ensure full, safe and unhindered access for humanitarian assistance to reach those civilians affected by the fighting in the Kismaayo area.
